The paper considers the design of frequency diverse array (FDA) for co-located multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar using grid-free direction of arrival (DOA) and range estimation method. We propose to employ a nested array as a physical array of the co-located MIMO radar, and utilize an inner uniform linear subarray for the transmitting array, while whole nested array is used for the receiving array. The proposed method can control the balance between DOA and range estimation performance by adjusting the level of the nested array. Meanwhile, a grid-free method by atomic norm minimization is utilized to realize the joint DOA and range estimation, making full use of the extended virtual array aperture of the proposed nested FDA (NFDA). Numerical results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach and the feasibility of controlling balance between DOA and range estimation performance by the level of the nested array.
The results of this research can be used in the field of array signal processing, such as indoor person positioning, and target detection of automotive radar.
